HealthPlus 4 Men Eswatini is currently running a “Rainbow Care Campaign” which seeks to support the members of the LGBTIQ & other minority groups who has been hit hard by the current state of affairs in the country. The country is currently in a state of civil unrest that has consequently led to violence, destruction of the infrastructure & looting, security forces brutality and human rights violations. All these has led to higher levels of poverty, loss of jobs, weak essential service delivery, limited access to the judiciary & free movements.
The loss of jobs has increased the number of the LGBTIQ community members and other minority groups migrating from Central Business Districts heading back home where stigma and discrimination is rife. It has been noted that a majority of Gender-Based Violence cases reported remain unattended to by the police because all focus is currently glued to the ongoing protests. Moral decay has caused minority groups to be vulnerable, they are being harassed by local community members, and police officers making it hard for them to even trust local law enforcement.
Moreover, the on-going protests have contributed to the increase of Covid-19 cases in the country. An increase in HIV new infections and defaults has been seen and the country is under a curfew making it hard for minority groups to access basic healthcare services. Most of the clients who fled back to the rural areas are now finding it hard to reach our healthcare centers which puts them at higher risks/ chances of contacting the Covid-19 virus.
HealthPlus 4 Men has on-going initiatives to support the LGBTIQ community members and other minority groups where there is need, may it be food, shelter, health services and psychosocial support. Food remains the main area of concern these days since these protests continue without showing any signs of calm. Since minority groups are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, food remains a priority as stipulated by the World Health Organization hence a majority of them are on ART. Shelter, as one of the basic needs, has become scarce for the LGBTIQ community members and other minority groups due to job losses. They no longer afford rentals and this has caused them to squat in friend’s or partners houses which also puts them at high risks of being abused or infected with HIV. Access to healthcare services is now limited due to curfews and Covid-19 restrictions. Decentralized Drug Distribution is one of the ways that we can use to bring healthcare services closer to them in order to minimize HIV transmission and defaults as well as Covid-19 infections.
