SOCIAL JUSTICE PROJECT

"Smash Hate and Embrace Diversity"

We are creating an inclusive, fair and just environmnet for service provision for everyone. The overall objective of our project is to reduce hate, stigma, and discrimination towards the LGBTIQ community mostly from members of the society, churches, police and healthcare workers and the realization of their health rights as human rights.

Project information

  • Project Name :Social Justice Project
  • Category :Advocacy and Psychosocial support
  • Donor:AmplifyChange
  • Beneficiaries :LGBTIQ community members
  • Stakeholders :LGBTIQs, Human Rights High Commission, ENAP
  • Start date :01-04-2020

The Swazi culture has trails of intolerance of the LGBTIQ which is rooted in lack of information and ignorance. There is general marginalization of the LGBTIQ community in the country by healthcare workers, church leaders. and the general population which result of the LGBTIQ community rating low access of healthcare services in the facilities which also prevents universal practice of their basic needs in the country including healthcare. Swaziland is a country that does not afford its citizens full democratic rights as stated by Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG). IIAG ranks Swaziland's position 45 over 52 countries, this indicator includes human rights, freedom of association, speech, expression and assembly and civil liberties.

  1. Sensitization of Healthcare workers from 16 healthcare facilities on LGBTI health needs/ SRHR and sexual orientation gender identity and expression. HP4M will target 4 health facilities in each region in the four regions of Swaziland. This will be done in their facilities where the LGBTIQ ambassadors will lead the sessions. The produced documentary that has been produced by HP4M titled" The Untold Stories of The Close" where the LGBTI community tell their true stories of hate, stigma and discrimination will be watched and have an open discussion on the issues.
  2. Sensitization of 16 police stations targeting four police stations in each region. This activity will be done in the police stations in the presence of the LGBTIQ ambassadors who will be sensitizing the police. The documentary will also be watched in the police sensitizations and discuss on the issues of violence that include the police force as well.
  3. Conducting a two days’ workshop for 50 LGBTIQ community members on Sexual Reproductive Health, rights, and sexual orientation. This will include The Ministry of Health. Human Rights Commission and the other CBOs
  4. Provision of coupons to LGBTI community members who want to access SRH services to 4 facilities in the country that will be selected on the healthcare workers sensitisation.
  5. Distribution of Safe Sex commodities. Condoms and water-based lubricants will be distributed to LGBTIQ hotspots, during workshops and by the workplace.
  6. NB: some of the above-mentioned activities would not be implemented because our target audience are the frontlines in fighting corona virus pandemic. We decided to reprogram these activities:
    • Sensitization of healthcare workers
    • Sensitisation of police officers
    • Sensitisation of community leaders, pastors, and parents
Additional activities after reprogramming.  National TV talk show sensitisations – the programme presenter and each LGBTIQ ambassador will tackle issues on LGBTIQ in various dimensions e.g. society, church, healthcare workers, justice system. The talk show programme will last for three months, scheduled for 6:00 pm on Thursdays. We will use calls for evaluating our viewers’ knowledge on LGBTIQs, SOGIE, and issues experienced by them.  Talk show promos, advertisement- to market the talk show to increase viewership so that we cover more ground.  Presenter stipend
